My Story:

Davy Family

~Read about the Davys' special times on Waiheke here!~

“Dear Dan, Dave and Di

Thank you for the wonderful memories you and the team of “Holiday Helpers” created for us this summer.  After many attempts at getting to Waiheke, we managed to keep Sam out of hospital long enough to come and discover this beautiful island.

Everything was so easy for us, which we so appreciate having left Starship at lunchtime and packing up to get the evening ferry. Sealink were so friendly and easy to deal with, not to mention generous in making it possible for us to take our car across.  Sam has so much medical gear (2 pumps, a drip pole on wheels, TPN that has to be transported in chilly bin, supplies etc) which means packing is quite an ordeal – so we appreciated being able to bring our car over.

The holiday home was so welcoming and beautiful, organised and relaxed.  To not have to think about towels and toys and food etc, it meant that we could switch off and truly relax.  The views from the bach are spectacular and we ate outside at every meal, making the most of the bbq, the great view and the spa.

We were fortunate to have hit the week with the best weather, so I have attached some photos for you (see below). The siblings of a sick child often have to cope with disappointment and missing out on time with a parent due to hospitalisations.  So to arrive to the bach and for the girls to have named gifts was very special for them.

Candace still speaks of her fishing experience and we all speak of the snapper we had for dinner that night, so please do pass on our heart-felt gratitude to Cam for giving up his time and taking Francis & Candace out fishing.  It was also great fun for the girls and Francis to go to the local cinema that morning for the only few hours of the trip when the weather wasn’t favouring us.

Passage Rock was such a great day out – it was a real treat to relax in the vineyard and enjoy some of the finest food and wines we’d ever had!  With a chronically sick kid, it is impossible for me to work in any capacity, as we are in and out of hospital and I am his full-time carer, so the generosity of Passage Rock to provide their beautiful meal was unexpected, overwhelming and totally delightful.  We have such great memories of sitting and laughing together whilst feasting amongst the vines.

It’s hard not to sound ‘cheesy’, but having left hospital after a stressful admission at 2pm and then arriving at your home on Waiheke and seeing all the love and kindness given to us, it really did make me cry!  Having a sick kid is constant – never a day out from it, so to have this chance to relax in your beautiful home with so many special things to do, great beaches, a car to use etc, is hard to put our appreciation in to words.  We were able to recharge and have time together as a family doing lovely things, laughing, eating and being on holiday – something that we don’t get to do very often.  We think you are all amazing and so kind and we are delighted to think that other families will get the opportunity to be refreshed on Waiheke Island as we did.

Thank you for all you did to arrange this for us – we really are deeply grateful and wish you and the Holiday Helpers all the best as you give up your time and resources to help families have a much needed break.

Very best wishes

Francis & Shirley, Jasmine, Candace & Sam Davy.”
