New-born screening saves lives.
IDFNZ supports new-born screening for early diagnosis of key genetic conditions. Testing for Inborn errors of immunity began in New Zealand in 2017 with the introduction of heel prick testing for severe combined immunodeficiencies (SCID).
Currently available scientific evidence from world-wide neonatal screening programmes and pilots clearly demonstrates that the early asymptomatic detection enabled by new-born screening, when linked to appropriate treatment, can be life changing and even lifesaving.
