SCID Newborn Testing launched In New South Wales

Newborn screening for primary immunodeficiency disorders

More good news for Australasian PID community !

IDFNZ is thrilled that newborn screening has recently commenced in Australia.

Screening for all New South Wales (NSW) newborns for the most severe forms of primary immunodeficiency (PID) disorders commenced on 1 August 2018.

The aim is to identify newborns with T cell or B cell disorders, including severe combined immunodeficiencies (SCID) and X-linked agammaglobulinaemia (XLA). Earlier detection of these PID disorders enables earlier treatment, including transplantation, and therefore significantly improved health outcomes.

Newborn screening for PID disorders in New Zealand commenced in December 2017.
